                      The season of striving

In 1961, after finishing my evening class of Hanyōng High, I applied for a Mathematics course at Seoul National University but failed the entrance exam. Although I had worked for a living and studied so hard at the same time, got embarrassed by the challenge of a place in SNU. I was, in fact, desolate and bereft for a living, food and bed as a drifter let alone a university challenger. This time again, Ch’angdae who was a cosmetic pedlar found me a living-in tutoring job, like he had done before. The student was in his third year of an Education College High School, a second son of a city counsellor in Sindang-dong. He questioned me in the basics of mathematics a lot. I first thought that they were rather trifling questions but, in fact, they helped in summarising my own study by answering his questions.

My student passed his entrance exam for the Engineering faculty of Seoul National University and so did I for the Korean Military Academy. KMA was the place where my real education started as I almost had a self-study depending on a few months of evening classes in middle/ high school. Whether my self-study contributed, I was good and quick at Maths, Physics, Electricity, Dynamics, Civil engineering etc. which were relatively easier for me than other subjects. In math and scientific subjects, I usually worked on main texts and some exercises but maintained in top ranks of the class. When others were spending long hours to solve as many as problems I, instead, read classics, biographies of great men and women, hero/ine stories and the magazines about the realm of thoughts etc.

-               A colonel, a stranger who altered my destiny

Before the written exam, all the KMA candidates had to go through preliminary physical examination first. It was a late autumnal afternoon in 1961, I entered the Army hospital which was then next to Kyōngbok-gung/ palace. Outside the building, a number of discoloured wooden seats were surrounded by trees with fall foliage and the autumnal air was stirring up the fallen leaves on the solid white ground. We left our clothing on the seats and entered the red brick building which looked quite dismal. It was cold enough to give us goose bumps as we were in our underpants only though no-one really showed any worry as everyone was so tensed up.

There was minimum height requirement and mine was 2-3mm marginal on the line which depended on how it was measured. For the last few days, all I thought about was my height.  At my third oldest brother’s, I marked scale length on a lounge pillar and asked my sister-in-law who just got married to measure me accurately fail. She measured me several times with a large set square then read out the digits which weren’t quite enough. Although she told me exactly what were shown on the scale but I felt a bit cross with her who sounded so callous. I thought that I could swell the crown of my head a bit by hitting with a piece of lumber and concentrated on studying for the written examination. On the day before the physical examination, I attempted to hit the top of my head with a piece of wood but it made a banging sound and was quite painful. I took the next option when I went to my local barber shop and asked to build my hair high and tufty as possible.

When I was going through all other sessions which were ‘pass’ though the height inspection kept bugging me throughout when it arrived. The inspector looked like a Grim Reaper who gave me a flat refusal ‘fail’ and stamped on the paper. I was stunned, ashamed of myself and felt totally blank. I came out and got dressed but couldn’t just walk away. I sat down, put my hands on my chin and looked up at the sky which looked so empty as well as my uncertain future.

When the Korean war came to a lull, I was ten years old. Some of the old boys from my village went to the war as soldiers came back for leave. My village was screened by dark green mountains. The sun came up late, didn’t stay long then, sunk to the west of mountain. As soon as the sun set, the village turned jet black and spooky all around. The old boys were not that tolerant to outsiders who were just passing by. They were targeted by our boys who caused trouble, frequently landed in the police station and got slapped. The tables were turned. The boys returned the village with rifle and bullets and beat the police. Then, soldiers were the masters as if they were above the law. They fired their rifles into deep water at their will. I saw one of their magazine rifles spewed the bullets out. P-taff, p-taff, p-taff, p-taff, p-taff… tracer bullets flew out, drawing red streaks, went in and out of the water then carried and disappeared into the remote mountain. A school of Small ricefish and glowing Minnows in red and silver surfaced of the water. We little boys in baggy trousers were watching it and our mouths were wide open in amazement. “Wow!”, the soldier boys just looked so great. The village women made buckwheat pancakes for the soldiers. They first turned over the lid of a caldron which was put on brazier and cooked on it. The soldiers were treated to the pancakes with home made wine and some pickled radish which had been taken out of the vegetable garden. The soldiers told us how heroically they fought in the war and what the military life was like combined with all the fables. Then, they mentioned the Korea Military Academy with a respect, at times. “What is the KMA?”, I asked. One of the soldiers answered. “There were many officers in the ranks from different backgrounds. Many of them were just taking advantage of their position by taking soldiers food away, for example. But these KMA officers were different and so cool. They were so knowledgeable and conducted us in the principles that made us respect them. Man-won, you study hard and make your way to the KMA. You can make it as you are so bright. But you must finish High School first then take an exam for the KMA”.

That was how my KMA dream had journeyed which appeared to be over by the sergeant inspector’s a decisive call “fail” a few seconds ago. “How can I go on living from now on?” Then, I remembered my mother. After my father died when I was seventeen my mother had nothing to offer me but praying. Every dawn, she went up to the hill with rice cake and put a fine glass of water at the well and prayed to God. I was born when she was 47 and my father was 53. As a baby of the family, I was growing up with all their love but suffering stomach trouble. They frequently took me on a piggyback to an acupuncturist who was an old lady and living across the stream. On a wintry day when I was six, the snow came down to ankle depth. One morning, on our breakfast table, there was cooked yellow millet, kimchi/ vegetable pickles and warm tea. A ray of sun came through a hole in the paper door and shone on the steamy cooked millet which looked so peaceful. My sister was ten and older brothers who were thirteen and sixteen respectively. My brothers were playful and had massive appetite, finished their meals first. Then, my thirteen year old brother put his hand on his backside and made a sound of breaking wind with his mouth then, gathered his rough hands over my bowl. I wasn’t even enjoying the cooked millet that had coarse and fibrous touch in my mouth, really put me off by my brother’s gross action. I just threw my spoon away and flounced out myself. My mother told the others off then, began to mollify me but I wouldn’t stop. She took my bowl to the kitchen and came back saying it was fresh one. I looked at it and found that it wasn’t fresh so, I got angry once more, saying, mom told me a lie. She then, brought a jug of water and rinsed the millet in front of me then told me to eat as it had been well washed. She fed me so gingerly in case my temper went off again.

I started school when I was full six as my birthday was at the end of December. On my first day of school, my brother who was mischievous and played by the breaking of wind took me to the school on his back. Since the first day, my mother or he took me to the school and back in turns on their backs. It was funny old days when some class mates were married already. Although I was the youngest, my class teacher gave me two main parts in school plays on my first year alone. Once I played a grandpa who had a son who was much bigger than me and my villagers began to call me a ‘Ttolttori’/ bright one after that show. However bright they thought me, as soon as I came back home from school, threw my school bag on the floor and sought for my mom’s breastfeeding. Whatever she was doing, I clung on her, rubbed her nipples a couple of times with my finger and enjoyed the salty milk. As she was ageing, wanted to stop breastfeeding and tried some tricks. She warned me she would apply nicotine from the tobacco pipe or Kūmgyerab/ the bitter malaria tablet on her nipples but gave in to my unmoving demands.

There were two main reasons how I had been able to concentrate on studying all those years under the hardship. First, it was the cool image of the KMA cadet and second, more importantly, free of living and academy fee which was an ideal dream for me who was penniless. But the sergeant’s decrying “fail” message. What about my mother who was even right now praying for me at back home. The thought of this made my eyes well up and my heart bled. “OK, I cannot give in now, it is said that even a sparrow makes a final tweet under the trap”, I felt a surge of challenge. I clenched my two fists and bit my bottom lip and approached the sergeant inspector. “Would you please measure my height once again?” His eyebrows raised sharply by my unexpected request. Apparently, he was about to leave for the weekend break. I elaborated. “My height might be a few millimetres shorter than the standard which couldn’t rule out the quality of being a good officer. Have you got any idea how much I’ve dreamt about joining the KMA for all my life? How would you feel if you were me?” The sergeant challenged me back, “is this whole process a joke to you?” Then, a very handsome major who was wearing an arm band with the word ‘Judge’ appeared and intervened in this unusual dispute. He then listened to us in turns. I told him if he would accept me I would make it up to the KMA with some of my other qualities instead of my short height. He gazed at me intensely for a while and said, “what a chap! You’re right”. He asked the sergeant to measure me again. When I was taking my shoes off he said, “no need, keep them on” and my height was just enough to be accepted. The major stamped “pass” on the correction box very firmly.
