          북한군과 가방끈

 

           경험과 학문 차이

 

이 세상에 나온 수많은 발언들에는 학문의 수준이 배어있다. 세계 품질이론의 대가 데밍 박사는 이렇게 말했다. “세상을 바꾸는 것은 경험이 아니라 학문이다.” 일본이 데밍 박사의 지도를 받아 세계 품질 1등국이 되었다. 그래서 그 공로를 칭송하고 기념하기 위해 데밍상을 제정했다. 데밍상은 일본에서만이 아니라 세계적으로 통하는 산업계의 노벨상이 됐다. 그가 세상을 바꾼 것은 경험이 아니라 학문이었다.

 

일본의 ‘이나’ 회사는 타일을 만드는 회사였다. 아무리 많이 구워도 타일의 크기가 일정치 않았다. 경험이 많은 사람들은 이 현상을 어쩔 수 없는 것이라 단언했다. 타일을 굽는 로의 불길이 로 내부 곳곳에 일정할 수가 없기 때문이라고 진단했다. 여기까지가 경험의 역할이었다. 그런데 통계수학을 공부한 가오루이시카와 박사가 회귀분석(Regression Analysis)이라는 수학개념 또는 편미분 개념을 이용해 이 문제를 풀었다. 경험이 세상을 바꾼 것이 아니라 학문이 세상을 바꾼 것이다.

 

김대중에게는 학문이 전혀 없었다. 그는 책을 많이 읽었을 뿐이다. 이런 사람을 패러다임 측면에서 ‘과 분류’를 한다면 “무식 똑똑이”다. 그보다 독서가 부족한 많은 사람들을 유혹할 수는 있어도 세상을 바꾸지는 못한다. 하지만 나의 학문은 해방이후 가장 큰 5.18역사를 정반대로 바꾸어 놓았다. 세상을 바꾼 것이다. 단지 그것이 널리 알려지기까지 시간이 걸릴 뿐이다.

 

     상상하지 않으면 결과도 없다

 

이 나라에 수학공식과 수학정리를 여러 개씩 만들어 낸 사람은 박사학위를 가진 수학자들 중에서도 매우 드물 것이다. 그런데 나는 그것들을 만들어 냈다. 그것도 미국의 응용 수리공학의 원조라 할 수 있는 미해군대학원에서 만들었다. 미국에는 엄청난 수의 수학 귀재들이 있다. 그 많은 수학계의 기라성 같은 수재들이 어째서 나보다 먼저 내가 만든 수학공식 2개와 6개의 수학정리를 만들어내지 못했을까? 그들이 상상하지 않았던 것을 내가 상상했기 때문이다.

 

모든 수학공식과 수학정리는 가정(Assumption, Conjecture)에서 출발한다. 훈련된 상상인 것이다. 모든 수학공식과 수학 정리는 상상으로부터 탄생한다. 상상이 없으면 공식도 없고 정리도 없다. 이를 훈련된 직관(Educated Intuition)이라 부른다. 그 학문분야에 대해 신이 되기 전에는 이런 상상을 할 수 없으며, 상상을 하지 못하면 공식도 정리도 만들어 내지 못하는 것이다. 상상을 창조물로 조각해 내는 것이 기나긴 증명과정이다.

 

이는 발명가가 제품을 새로 만들 때에도 적용된다. 소니의 초대 회장 이부카가 두꺼운 영문 책을 탁자에 내놓고 이와 똑같은 사이즈의 캠코더를 만들라 지시했다. “미지의 개척자”라는 철학과 모토를 가지고 천막회사를 차렸던 그는 전자제품 개발의 귀재였다. 상상이 있었기 때문에 그는 세계 최초로 캠코더를 만들어 낼 수 있었다. 그는 트랜지스터를 가지고 소형 라디오를 만들 수 있다는 상상을 했고 그래서 1957년 트랜지스터-라디오를 개발해 미국시장을 뚫었다. 그의 상상이 ‘장롱처럼 육중했던 진공관 라디오’를 ‘손바닥에 들고 다니는 소형 라디오’로 변화시킨 것이다. 이처럼 상상이 있어야 결과가 나오는 것이다. 이 나의 말은 비단 수학계에서만 통하는 것이 아니라 모든 학문에서 다 통할 것이다. 석사다 박사다 자격증을 딴 사람들은 많지만 모두가 창조력을 가진 것은 아니다. 창조력은 점수가 길러주는 것이 아니라 늘 깊게 음미하는 과정에서 길러지는 것이다.

 

       북한군 개입, 아무도 상상하지 않았다

 

많은 사람들이 말한다. “북한군이 개입했다면 전두환 노태우 시절에 그 막강한 정보력을 가지고 왜 발견하지 못했겠느냐?” 전두환 시대의 최고 정보실무자였던 이학봉은 나와 내 선배에게 여러 번 말했다. “북한 간첩들이 수십 명 암약했다는 사실은 통신 감청 등으로 확인했지만 600명씩이나 왔다고 하면 당신이 또라이 된다. 그러면 당신이 남긴 훌륭한 책(수사기록으로 본 12.12와 5.18)도 물거품이 된다. 제발 그 소리만은 하지 마라.” 김영삼 시대에 안기부장을 한 권영해는 지금도 다니면서 말한다. “내가 누구냐, 내가 그래도 안기부장을 했는데 5.18을 왜 모르겠느냐, 북한 간첩이 50-60명 정도 암약했다는 것은 충분히 있을 수 있는데 600명이라는 숫자는 황당한 숫자다.”

 

이학봉도 권영해도 1980.5.21. 상황일지를 자세히 들여다보지 않았다. 당시 그들의 지위는 상황일지를 들여다 볼 군번이 아니라 보고만 받는 군번이었다. 그들에게 보고를 하는 사람들은 감히 북한군 개입이라는 명제를 상상하지 못했다. 자료들을 통계처리 할 생각을 하지 못했고, 원천자료 그대로를 방치한 것이다. 그들이 상상하지 못했던 북한특수군, 5.18이후 38년이 지나도록 아무도 상상하지 못한 “북한군 개입”을 나 혼자 상상했던 것이다. 상상을 한 나는 북한군 개입을 증명해 냈고, 상상조차 하지 못한 사람들은 북한군 개입을 증명하지 못한 것이다. 지금 북한군 개입을 부정하는 사람들 역시 그것을 상상하지 못해본 사람들이다. 그래도 제대로 학문 근처에라도 가 본 사람이라면 남의 '훈련된 상상'을 함부로 무시하는 ‘되지 못한 매너’는 보이지 않았을 것이다.

 

    가방끈 짧음을 스스로 노출하는 참새 족들

 

나는 정보특기 장교였고, 지금의 국방정보본부의 전신인 합참 정보국과 중앙정보부에서 북괴정보를 생활화했다. 1년간의 전략정보과정을 이수했고, 베트남에서 44개월 동안 게릴라들과 전투를 했다. 5년 동안의 석사 박사 학문과정이 있었고, 3년간의 미해군대학원 교수과정이 있었고, 7년 동안 국방연구원에서 책임연구원으로 연구능력을 향상시켰다. 정보분야와 학문분야에서 나는 A코스에서 A학점을 받은 사람이라 할 수 있다. 여러 사람들과 함께 공부를 하다 보면 C학점 받은 사람들이 A학점 받은 사람보다 더 잘난 체 한다. 세상의 이런 속성으로 인해 나는 지금까지 C코스에서 C학점 받은 사람들에 의해 또라이로 매도돼 온 것이다. A코스 A학점의 능력을 가진 사람이 17년 동안 연구한 내용을 놓고 자력조차 없는 C코스 C학점 짜리들이 매도질들을 하는 것이다. 심지어는 내가 내놓은 책들을 정성껏 읽어보지도 않고 함부로 폄하한다. 앉을자리 설 자리 모르고 지 혼자 잘났다고 나대는 속성이 박혀있는 참으로 고약하고 가벼운 인간들이다.

광주에 북한군이 보이고 안 보이고는 '훈련된 상상력' 차이였다. 그런데그 '훈련된 상상력'은 '경지의 세계'에서만 피어나는 꽃이다. 이 아름다운 꽃을 소중히 여기지 않고 짓밟는 행위는 야만이다.

Difference Between Experience and Scholarly Attainment

 

Many of famous sayings in the world have levels of scholarly attainment soak in it. Dr. Deming, the great scholar of world quality control theory, once said, "It is not experience that changes the world, but it is scholarly attainment." Japan has risen up to a country of first grade quality by following the lead of Dr. Deming. To keep praising his distinguished service and to commemorate it, Japan made Dr. Deming prize. This prize is well known as Nobel Prize in industrial world not only in Japan but throughout the world. It was his scholarly attainment that he changed the world with, not with experience.

 

The 'Ihna Company' in Japan was a tile maker. However many tiles they may burn to make tiles, their sizes were never the same. Many of experienced people said that it was unavoidable. They diagnosed that it was because the stream of flame, which burns the tiles, was not even in every corner in the kiln. The function of experience was good up to here. Then, Dr. Kaoruisikawa, who studied statistics mathematics, solved the tile problem by applying mathematical conception of Regression Analysis or partial differentiation conception. It was not experience that changed the world, but scholarly attainment did it.

 

Kim Dae-Joong had no academic learning at all. He simply read many books, and that's all. If we are to classify this sort of man into 'family group' in paradigmatic approach, he would belong to 'ignorant-bright'. He can tempt many people who are in lack of reading, but he is not capable of changing the world. But my learning has changed the history of the May 18th, the biggest one since the liberation of 1945, into a direct opposite one. It has really changed the world. It is merely taking time to be widely known.

 

If No Imagination, Then No Outcome

 

Among the doctorate mathematicians in this country, there will be few of them who made out several mathematical formulas and theorems. But I did it. I made them out at the Graduate School of the US Navy Academy, which is well known as a home of applied mathematical engineering. In America, there are lots of math genius. Why such a galaxy of many genius were unable to make out the two mathematical formulas and six theorems that I was successful to make out ahead of me. It's because I imagined of what they did not imagined of.

 

Every mathematical formula and theorem starts from assumption or conjecture. It's a well-trained imagination. So, every mathematical formula and theorem is born from imagination. If no imagination, then neither formula nor theorem. It is called educated-intuition. You can not do this kind of imagination before you attain absolute perfection in this field, and if you can not do the imagination, you will fail to make any formula or theorem. Sculpturing the imagination into a creation, it is a long course of proving the truth.

 

This can be applied to an inventor when he tries to make new invention. Sony's first chairman Ibuka, putting a thick English book on the desk, ordered the staff to make a camcorder the same size with the book. He, who previously set up a tent company with the philosophy and motto of 'pioneer of the unknown', was a genius in developing new electronic products. He was able to make the first camcorder in the world as he had imagined. He imagined he was making small radio with transistors, and this led him to develop transistor-radio in 1957, and he was successful to get through to the US market. It is his imagination that changed the vacuum radio, heavy like a bureau, into a small radio portable in hands. Like this, you need imagination to get outcome. What I am saying will go true not only in the mathematical circle but also in all fields of scientific study. There are many who got the degree of doctor or master, but not all of them have creative faculty. Creative faculty is not a thing to be bred by good grade. It grows up in the course of ceaseless and deep reading and appreciation.

 

North Korean Troops' Intervention, Nobody Ever Imagined

 

Many people says, "If North Korean troops intervened there, how could Jon Doo-Whan and Noh Tae-Woo Administration not find in out with the mighty intelligence capability?" Lee Hak-Bong, who was then the top official in charge of intelligence, said to me and my senior several times, "We confirmed through communication interception that tens of the North spies were active behind the scene, but if you insist they reach up to 600 troops, people will think you a weirdo. If so, your remarkable book (Complete Analysis on December 12th and May 18th by Investigation Records) will come naught. Don't ever say it again". Kwon Yong-Hae, a retired KCIA Director who was in charge in Kim Yong-Sam Administration days, still goes around saying, "As you know who I am, ain't it me who served for KCIA Director. How could I don't know about the May 18th. It is quite reasonable to say that 50 or 60 of the North agents were active undercover, but the number 600 is something incredible".

 

Neither Lee Hak-Bong nor Kwon Yong-Hae looked into the details of Daily Report on Situation. At that time, they were in higher position than just looking into it, but used to get briefing from low rank reporters. The reporters were never able to dare to imagine the thesis of North Korean troops' intervention. No one came up with the idea to collect statistics with the data, so they neglected the basic document as it was. -- North Korean special troops they never imagined of, -- but I imagined of "North Korean troops' intervention" myself alone which no one was able to imagine for the last 38 years since the May 18th, 1980.

 

I, who imagined it, have succeeded proving North Korean troops' intervention, but those, who were totally unable to imagine it, failed to prove any of it. Those who deny North Korean troops' intervention are also those who were never able to imagine of it. For all that, if they ever had a chance to come near true learning, they would not have showed 'good for nothing manner' of ignoring other's 'well-trained imagination' thoughtlessly.

I was an intelligence specialty officer in the Army. I made it my daily life to deal with intelligence on North Korea in the then Intelligence Bureau of Joint Chief of Staff (Currently the National Intelligence Headquarters), and in Korean Central Intelligence Agency. There, I finished studying strategic intelligence course for one year, and then I carried out operations against guerilla for 44 months in Vietnam. I studied further five years to go through master's and doctor's course of learning in the US Navy Academy, and another three years for professor's course there. I improved my research capability as a responsible researcher in the Defense Institute for seven years. I may well be called the one who earned A degree in A course in the field of intelligence and learning. When you study with various people, you'll easily find that those who got C grade usually assume airs of importance more highly than those who earned A grade. Because of the worldly attribute like this, I have been abused as a weirdo till now by those who used to get merely C grade in C course. For the truthful outcome, for which I made ceaseless research for 17 years with my proven ability of having earned A gread in A course, those, who used to get only C grade in C course and don't have even self-research ability, are speaking ill of the outcome. They go further to thoughtlessly depreciate my books that I issued without reading it carefully. They even don't know when to sit and when to rise, and are always boasting that they are distinguished and great people. These people have this attributes embedded deep in their mind. Likewise, they are inevitably vicious and flippant things.

 

It is the very 'well-trained imagination' that made difference between the ability to see North Korean troops and inability not to see them. And this 'well-trained imagination' is a flower that blossoms only in the world of absolute attainment. Anybody who don't treasure up and cherish this flower but tread it down, he is surely a barbarian.
