London: North Korea's dictator Kim Jong-Il, said to be one of the most mysterious leaders in the world, has built a secret military hideout in a mountain close to the Chinese border, a media report said on Saturday.
According to the military analysis experts of the Hong Kong bureau of Kanwa Information Centre, a non-government news agency registered in Toronto, the North Korean leader plans to fight a guerrilla campaign from his hideout, should his nation be invaded or engulfed in civil unrest.
Beneath a lavish palace used by him, the interior of Mount Baekdusan has been excavated and can store helicopters and fighter jets that can take off from a nearby airfield, the experts have claimed.
"This whole region is historically significant to the entire regime because this is where Kim Il-Song, Kim's father, staged his guerrilla campaign against the Japanese during the occupation in the early decades of the last century.”
"We believe this would be the last place that the present regime would retreat to and try to conduct a campaign such as we are presently seeing in Afghanistan," Andrei Chang, the author of the report, was quoted by British newspaper 'The Daily Telegraph' as saying.
And if the worst came to the worst, the Chinese border is a short helicopter flight away and Beijing is expected to offer Kim and his closest aides sanctuary, Chang said, adding the construction of the facility, which has taken many years, underlines the fears within the regime.
Kanwa has identified the Mount Baekdusan "guest house" as the location of the military headquarters after examining 13 similar palaces across the impoverished country, the report said.
