       뚝섬무지개(530쪽)에 대하여

         지만원 바로 알리기가 중요한 이유

 

저는 최근 홈페이지 시스템클럽에 “지만원은 한국판 갈릴레오”라는 제목의 글을 포함해 저에 대한 자랑 글 몇 개를 올렸습니다. 자칫 저에 대한 유치한 자랑으로 오해될 수도 있을 것입니다. 그러나 이것은 저 개인을 부각시키기 위한 것이 아니라 제가 이 나라를 ‘빨갱이 없는 세상’으로 만들기 위해 지난 18년 동안 한 인생을 바쳐 연구한 5.18 연구결과를 살리기 위한 고육지책이었습니다.

 

     지만원은 ‘민주화역사’를 ‘게릴라역사’로 바꾼 대한민국 과학자

 

저는 38년 동안 ‘민주화역사’로 굳어온 5.18역사를 ‘게릴라역사’로 바꾸었습니다. 이는 역사에 대한 이변적 전환이요 적화세력에 의해 굳어져온 성역에 대한 정면도전입니다. 빨갱이들의 뿌리는 5.18입니다. 콩가루 같은 인생들을 하나의 세력으로 뭉치게 하려면 시멘트가 있어야 하는데 그 시멘트가 곧 역사의 정통성을 확보하는 것입니다. 저들이 5.18을 민주화역사로 고착시켜 온 이유는 바로 이 때문입니다. 따라서 빨갱이들이 그들의 뿌리를 뽑아내려는 지만원을 그냥 두려 하겠습니까? 필사적으로 국민들로부터 차단시키고, 제 연구결과를 매몰시키려는 노력을 하는 이유가 바로 여기에 있습니다. 

 

        지만원은 찌라시 인간이라고 생각하는 인생들

 

그런데 매우 자학적인 것은 애국자임을 자처하는 우익계의 많은 사람들이 빨갱이들에 가세해서 제 연구결과를 깎아내리고 지만원이라는 사람을 찌라시 인간 정도로 격하합니다. 이들은 지만원이라는 사람이 자기들보다 더 잘난 것이 없는 사람, 오히려 자기들보다 못한 또라이 기질을 가진 사람 정도로 인식하고 있을 것이 틀림없어 보입니다. “지가 설마 나보다 잘났겠어?” 이런 생각이 저변에 깔려 있을 것입니다.

 

     갈릴레오는 천동설을 지동설로 바꾼 이태리 과학자

 

5.18의 역사를 뒤집은 것은 천동설을 지동설로 바꾼 것만큼 엄청난 전환입니다. 그렇다면 그 전환을 주도한 지만원도 1600년을 대표하던 갈리레오와 같은 엄청난 과학자여야 하고 엄청난 용기를 가진 사람이어야 합니다. 그런데 사람들은 지만원을 자기들과 비슷한 존재이거나 못한 존재라고 생각들 합니다. 따라서 연구결과를 살리려면 반드시 지만원이 갈릴레오에 버금갈만한 대단한 과학자, “한국의 갈릴레오” 정도로 인식되어야 합니다. 가짜로 조작하자는 것이 아닙니다. “뚝섬 무지개”에 기록돼 있는 제 모습 그대로를 널리 알리자는 것입니다.

뚝섬무지개가 곧 지만원을 묘사한 조각품입니다. 목가적인 계절, 낭만적인 계절, 베트남 전투의 계절, 극기의 계절, 몰입의 계절, 창조의 계절, 개혁의 계절, 프리마돈나의 계절, 반공투쟁의 계절 등으로 점철된 모습들이 파노라마처럼 전개돼 있습니다. 사람들에게 가장 갖고 싶어 하는 것이 무어냐고 물으시면, 대부분은 부귀, 영화를 손에 쥐었으면 좋겠다고 대답할 것입니다. 하지만 저는 20세 전후 독서에 몰두하고 사색하는 시간을 많이 가져서인지 오로지 “아름다움”을 갖고 싶어 했습니다. 아니 제 일생을 아름답게 가꾸고 싶어 했습니다. 저는 제 생의 하루하루를 하늘이 주신 캔버스에 채웠습니다. 하늘이 주신 캔버스에 아름다운 그림을 그리면서 절대자를 향해 걸어가고 있는 사람입니다. 그래서 제 생은 농도가 짙었고, 농도가 짙어서 설사, 하늘이 인생을 되돌려주신다 해도 다시는 반복해서 살고 싶지 않은 그리고 다시는 재현해 낼 수 없는 그런 가시밭길 인생이었습니다.    

 

무엇이 내게 이로우냐를 생각하지 않고 무엇이 정의이고 아름다우냐를 잣대로 하여 살아갑니다. 저는 제가 가꾼 꽃밭을 사랑하고, 그것을 제 손으로 글을 통해 조각합니다. 그 조각품이 바로 “뚝섬 무지개”입니다. 눈이 어두워 책을 멀리하셨던 어른들도 이 책을 잡으면 놓을 수 없었다 말씀들 하시고, 병석에 계신 어른분도 이 책을 놓지 못했다고 하십니다. 아름다운 경치가 주는 아름다움도 있지만 글을 통해 전개되는 아름다움도 있습니다.

 

     선물로 받은 영문번역

 

이 책을 읽은 분들은 이 책을 이웃에 읽히고 싶다 말씀들 하십니다. 참 잘 읽었다 감탄도 하십니다. 그러나 이 책을 영문으로 번역할 생각을 하는 사람은 없을 것입니다. 이 방대한 양을 그 누가 영어로 번역을 할 수 있겠습니까? 그런데 얼굴도 모르고 목소리도 들은 적이 없는 영국에 사시는 교포 한분이 건강도 그리 좋으시지도 않은데 1년 이상에 걸쳐 번역을 해서 어느 날 선물로 보내주셨습니다. 이렇게 엄청난 노력을 요하는 번역을 감히 하고 싶어 하도록 유혹한 내용들이 바로 “뚝섬 무지개”인 것입니다. 이 영문 책도 내달 안으로 발간될 것입니다. 번역하신 강 선생님은 문학적 표현이 대단하십니다. 정서도 저와 같으시다 합니다. 셰익스피어 고장의 문학적 표현들이 “뚝섬 무지개“를 더욱 아름답게 가꾸었습니다. 영문책 제목은 ”The Lonely Seeker in the Fog", ‘안개 속의 외로운 탐구자’입니다.

이 “뚝섬 무지개”와 “5.18연구결과”는 상호 보완 관계에 있습니다. 전자가 후자를 확신시키는 엄청난 촉매제입니다.

Why Is It Important to Make Jee Man-Won Known Correctly

 

Recently I put on line a few writings of self-respect in the System Club of my homepage including the one titled “Jee Man-Won is a Galileo of Korean version.” It may well be misunderstood for an immature self-praise. But this was not to make myself stand out in bold relief, but was an unwilling desperate measure to keep alive the May 18th research result for which I devoted myself for 18 years hoping to make this country ‘a world devoid of the Reds’.

 

Jee Man-Won is a South Korean scientist who shifted ‘history of democratization’ into ‘history of guerilla’. I have shifted the history of May 18th, which has been hardened to ‘history of democratization’ for the last 38 years, into ‘history of guerilla’. This was to make a extraordinary conversion in history, and is also a frontal challenge to the sanctuary which has been hardened by the reds group. The Reds have its root in the May 18th. We need cement to get the totally scattered fragmentary individuals united into one, and the cement can be acquired by securing historical orthodoxy. This is why the Reds have been hardening the may 18th history into history of democratization. In this situation, are the Reds going to just sit and watch Jee Man-Won trying to root them out? This is just the reason why they are desperate to cut Jee Man-Won out off from the nation, and strive to bury the result of my research.

 

The Trivial Beings Who Think Jee Man-Won Is something of Trash

 

Now, what is so self-tormenting is, not a little rightists who look upon themselves as patriots are undermining the result of my research taking sides with the Reds, and degrade Jee Man-Won’s personality to something of a trash. They look sure to regard Jee Man-Won as the one not so better distinguished than them, or rather inferior to them who has a disposition of a weirdo. “Could he be possible to be born better than me?”-- Basically they seem to be thinking like this.

 

Galileo Was An Italian Scientist Who Shifted Geocentric Theory into Heliocentric Theory

 

Having turned the May 18th history over means that an important conversion was made to history as great as having shifted the geocentric theory to heliocentric theory. As it is, so Jee Man-Won who initiated this conversion should naturally be recognized as a great scientist of great courage like Galileo who is regarded as having represented the times of AD 1600s. But people think Jee Man-Won to be in the same class with them or inferior to them. To keep my research result alive, Jee Man-Won should be recognized as a great scientist in high level almost second to Galileo, or as ‘a Galileo of Korean version’. I am not intending to do anything of fabrication. I just want to let more people know what I am as described in the book ‘The Rainbow on Dike Island’.

 

The Rainbow on Dike Island

 

“The rainbow in Dike Island“ is the very sculpture which describes Jee Man-Won more than most. A panorama of a variety of my life is unfolding in it in sequence of pastorial season, romantic season, season of battle in Vietnam, season of self-denial, of absolute absorption, of creation, of reformation, season of a prima donna, season of anti-Communism struggle, etc. If people are to be asked what they want the most, I guess most of them would say they want wealth and life in splendor. As for me, maybe because I was usually absorbed in reading and spent lots of time in speculation in 20 years age, what I wanted to pursue was solely ’Beauty’. Or rather, I hoped to cultivate my whole life to a beautiful one. I filled the canvas the Divine bestowed on me with each day of my life. I am a man walking toward the Divine trying to paint a beautiful picture on the canvas which He bestowed on me. Accordingly, the concentration of adversity in my life was so thick, and because it was thick, my life was just like treading a thorny path which I would never want to repeat and never could I re-enact, should the Divine return it to me.

 

I lived on the criterion which can tell what is righteous and what is beautiful, never taking it into consideration which is beneficial to me. I love the flower garden which I grow, and I sculpture it by my own handwriting. This sculpture is the very “The Rainbow on Dike Island”. The elderly people, who avoided reading books because of failing sight, said they could not lay it down once they started reading, and a certain elderly ill in bed was said unable to lay down this book. We can appreciate the beauty that beautiful sceneries give to us, and likewise we can also appreciate the beauty unfolding in a writing.

 

Translation into English, It Came to Me as A present

 

Those who read this book say they would like to recommend it to neighbors. Some say they were struct with wonder after enjoying reading it quite a lot. But nobody would ever have thought to translate it into English. Who can ever translate this great volume into English? An elderly resident in England, however, made efforts to translate it over a year despite his condition of being out of health, and sent to me one day for a present, whom I have never met or even heard of his voice. This is the contents of this very book “The Rainbow on Dike Island” which tempted the reader to dare to make great efforts to translate it. This English book will be issuing in next month. Sir Kang, who translated it, has a great power in literary expression. He is said to have similar emotional disposition with me. The literary expression of home of Shakespeare refined “The Rainbow on Dike Island” more beautiful. The title of English book is “The Lonely Seeker in the Fog”. This “The Rainbow on Dike Island” and “the May 18th research result” have mutually complementary relations. The former will act as great catalyst to propagate the latter.
