Beautiful books, films and even blowing leaves encountered at an impressionable age were great teachers of wisdom. The world top notch teachers are in the books.

위의 책 제목은 "안개속의 탐구자" (The Seeker In The Fog) 입니다. 뚝섬무지개 내용을 뭉뚱그려 이렇게 표현한 것입니다.   

'뚝섬 무지개"를 세계적인 대 문호 고장인 영국에서 사시는 분이 아름답다 번역해 주셨습니다. 영문 번역이 제 글보다 더 이름답다는 것이 중평입니다. 저는 수학 박사입니다. 그것도 모든 철학을 통합하는 순수수학이 아니라 각박한 현실 세계를 발전시키는 '현실-수학'입니다. 수학에도 낭만이 있고 아름다운 철학이 있습니다. 하지만 저는 수치를 따져 무엇이 이익이고 무엇이 손해인지를 연구하는 냉혈적인 '응용수학'(Aplied Mathmatics)을 했습니다. 통상적으로 수학박사, 공학박사는 글을 잘 쓰지 못합니다. 자기의 전문 영역을 상식세계에 잘 전달할 줄도 모릅니다. 그런데 저는 제가 하고 싶은 말을 제가 직접 글로 조각합니다. 이 세상 위대한 인물들 중, 자기 손으로 자기의 일생을 소개한 사람 있는가요? 제가 알기로는 영국의 위대한 재상 디즈레일리 말고는 그 누가 있을까 생각합니다. 저는 제 인생을 아직까지는 시적으로 살아왔다고 생각합니다. 제가 살아온 인생도 시적으로 표현하고 싶은 사람입니다. 제 글은 헤밍웨이의 글만큼 단문입니다. 의사를 전달하기 위해 사람들은 장문을 쓰고 거기에 더해 학자연(Pedantic) 하게 보이도록 문장체를 씁니다.   

 

하지만 저는 매우 짧은 글들을 씁니다. 문장체가 아니라 구어체를 씁니다. 글을 길게 쓰는 것은 누구나 합니다. 하지만 단문은 누구나 쓰지 못합니다. 저는 문명인의 영혼을 일생동안 견지하면서 살아왔다고 자부합니다. 테레사 수녀님처럼 종교적으로 살아왔다는 것이 아니라 너그러운신 절대자께서 모든 중생들에게 제공해주신 아름다운 하늘과 바다를 찬미하며 그 속에서 그윽한 자신만의 영혼 세계를 형성하면서 살아 왔습니다. 황야의 무법자가 남겨준 도도한 영상을 기억하면서 영혼 속의 총잡이로 살아왔다고 회고합니다. 어느 위대하신 세상의 선배님깨서 남기셨을지는 알 수 없습니다. 하지만 제게는 후인들에 당당히 전하고 싶은 말이 있습니다. "야만은 문명을 이길 수 없다"   

 

Barbarism Can Not Win Civilization

The title of this book that has the passage above in is, "The Lonely Seeker in the Fog". It is a simplified expression that wraps up the whole story of "The Rainbow on Dike Island"

 

A gentleman who lives in England, hometown of the world greatest writer, favored me with kind translation of my book "The Rainbow on Dike Island", writing to me that my book was beautiful and emotional one. Public opinion is that his English translation in more beautiful and refined than my writing. I am a mathematics doctor. And that is, my math was focused on practical reality aimed at improving the rough world, not on pure math integrating all scientific philosophy. Even math has romantic atmosphere and beautiful philosophy. But my special field was cold-hearted "Applied Mathematics", that is for making research on what makes profit and what causes loss by evaluating numerical values. Generally speaking, math and engineering doctors are not good at writing. Sometimes they have trouble communicating their speciality knowledge to the world of common sense. But I can sculpture myself what I want to say in my own writing. Is there any great figure in the world who introduced his life by his own writing? I think there is no one except, as far as I know, the only one of former great British Premier Disraeli. I think I lived a poetic life until now. I wish to write my life in poetic expression. My writings are composed of short sentences like those of Hemingway. Usually people write long sentences to convey their thoughts, and that in more literary style to show it more pedantic.

 

But I write in short sentences, not in literary style but in dialogue style. Writing long sentences, everybody is easy to do it, but not everybody is easy to write short sentences. I am proud that I have lived a life keeping civilized person's soul throughout my life. Not that I lived a religious life like Mother Teresa, but I, while praising the beautiful sky and seas which the generous Absolute Being endowed to all creatures, I kept on living in there forming my own subtle and profound spiritual world. I look back upon the past for having lived in the spirit of a gunfighter, always keeping in mind the haughty images that the outlaw in the wilderness (from the movie, A Fistful of Dollars, and its sequels) left to us. Maybe some predecessors have left this saying, but I am not sure. Anyway I have a majestic word that I'd like to give to my juniors, -- "Barbarism can not win civilization".
