2012년 12월 19일 대선에서 국민의 52%의 지지를 받은 박근혜 당시 여당 대통령후보는 대한민국 역사상 최초의 여성 대통령으로 당선되었다. 그러나 안타깝게도 그의 임기 1년을 남겨두고 오랜 한 측근의 비리행각에 휘말려 드디어 2017년 3월 10일 헌법재판소의 탄핵 인용으로 대통령 자리에서 물러나게 되었다.

지난 2016년 12월 9일 국회에서 대통령의 탄핵이 결의되고 그 결의안이 대통령 자신과 헌법재판소에 전달 된 시점부터 대통령 권한이 정지된 것이다. 그 시점을 전후하여 우리 사회는 대통령 탄핵 반대 세력과 지지세력들간에 첨예한 대립이 유지되어 왔다. 이는 70년전 대한민국이 탄생하기 직전에 경험했던 좌우대립보다도 더 극명한 극한의 대결로 비쳐진다.

이 상황에서 무슨 긴 설명이 필요하겠는가?

우리모든 애국 국민들은 일치단결하여 하루속히 국민적 총화를 이뤄 지금 당면하고 있는 국내외적 난국을 극복하고 명실공히 굳건한 대한민국을 지키는데 사력을 다해야 할 것이다. 이는 선택의 여지없는 우리모두의 절체절명의 의무인 것이다. 만의 하나 실기하면 대한민국의 정체를 부정하는 세력들과 북한정권에게 오판을 저지를 수있는 치명적 빌미만을 제공하는 우를 범하게 될 것이다. 국민의 한 사람으로서 국민적 총화와 단결을 간절히 호소한다.

ROK has written a new chapter in history

On December 19, 2012, the ruling party's presidential candidate, Park, Geun-hye was elected as the first female president with the support of 52% of the electorate.

However, very regrettably, a year before the end of her five-year presidential term, as of March 10, 2017, she has become the first president in Korea removed from office by the Constitutional Court's ruling, saying her Presidency cannot be tolerated for the sake of protecting the Constitution. She was facing serious corruption scandals that resulted from the actions of her long-time confidante.

From the moment that the National Assembly delivered the bill of impeachment to the President and to the Constitutional Court, presidential authority was immediately suspended pending the Court's final decision.

From that moment on, the presidential impeachment matter has been a divisive social issue, especially between the anti- and pro-impeachment groups. It has been worse than the polarizing ideological confrontations between the left and the right that we once experienced back in the late 1940s just before the ROK was founded. More worrisome is that the present anti-impeachment groups have resolutely announced their future movement to nullify this impeachment. Without a doubt, if such social unrest continues, it will eventually create great chaos.

What else needs to be said further in this situation?

As Korean patriots, we all must in no time at all concentrate our efforts to achieve national unity and overcome present internal and external crises and fight tooth and nail for the sake of keeping our country. This is our desperate responsibility, and not a choice. If fail, it will be an irrevocable, fatal mistake for us to give ammunition to those who have long denied our national identity and North Korea that may miscalculate taking advantage of our social instability. As an innocent citizen, I am sincerely urging you all to strive for national reconciliation and unity.
