요즘 국내외 언론들이 최근 중국의 북한탈북자 강제송환문제를 연일 크게 다루고 있다. 동토의 집단 북한의 유일한 정치적 경제적 후원자인 중국은 세계여론을 무시하고 북에서 갖은 고난을 이기지 못해 국경을 넘어 탈출한 난민들을 인권과 인륜을 무시하고 북으로 되돌려 보내려 하는 것이다.

이런 반인륜적 처사에 대항하여 서울에서는 한 여성국회의원이 서울의 중국대사관 앞에서 이 쌀쌀한 날씨에 벌써 11일째 단식 농성 중이었다.

시민운동가이고 군사 평론가인 지만원 박사를 주축으로 하는 애국 우익인사들이 이 연약한 여성국회의원의 외로운 투쟁을 위로하고자 계획한 시위에 동참하고자 나는 3월 2일 아침 10시에 중국대사관 앞으로 나갔다. 벌써 100여명이 운집해 있었다. 자유선진당의 박선영의원은 작은 텐트 속에서 목소리도 못내고 일체 움직임이 없어 보였다. 기자들이 드문드문 인터뷰를 시도해보지만 허사이었다. 찬 공기를 마시며 작은 텐트 안에서 오직 동족의 안위를 위하여 자신을 내던지는 이 위대한 여성국회의원의 결연한 자기 희생정신을 확인하고 또 대한민국 수도 서울에서 바람에 휘날리는 중국의 오성기를 바라보면서 나는 순간 많은 상념에 잠겨야만 했다.

지난 2007년 초에 그 넓은 광화문광장을 꽉 메웠던 미국쇠고기 수입반대를 외치던 그 많던 애국자들은 지금 이 시각 어디서 무얼 하고 있을까? 그들의 나라사랑 열기가 진정 사실이었다면 지금쯤 효자동 거리는 중국을 규탄하는 데모인파로 인산인해를 이뤘어야 했을 것 아닌가? 거리는 한산하기만 하다. 기상천외한 아이러니가 아닐 수 없다.  한 주권국가는 자기나라에 들어와있는 외교기관들의 안전을 도모할 책임이 있음을 잘 알고 있다. 그래서 그런지 이미 중국 대사관 앞은 경찰 버스와 경찰병력으로 철통같이 에워싸져 있고 그저 반대편 길가에는 나이든 애국노인들 100여명 남짓만 웅성거릴 뿐이었다.

중국외교부장이 오후2시쯤 중국대사관을 방문한다는 얘기 때문에 좀더 많은 애국인사들이 모여들었다. 오후2시가 조금 넘어서 텐트 속에 있던 박의원이 갑자기 실신한 것이다. 이를 지켜본 지만원 박사가 재빨리 119구급차를 호출했다. 즉시 구급차가 요란한 소릴 내면서 도착했다. 쓰러진 박선영의원이 들것에 누운 채로 후송되었다. 국민의 한 사람으로서 존경과 함께 큰 자부심을 느꼈다..

박선영의원이 실려나간 그 자리에 아니나다를까 요즘 우후죽순으로 나타난 신당소속 정치꾼들이 삼삼오오 나타나서 악수를 해대며 명함을 돌리는 장면이 눈에 들어온다. 기분이 갑자기 벌레 씹은 듯 변하였다. 왜냐하면 그들의 행동이 무척 기회주의적으로 비쳐졌기 때문이다. 재론할 여지없이 그들은 말 그대로 정치꾼들인 것이다. 박선영의원의 빠른 회복을 기원하며 11일간의 투쟁의 대가가 성공적인 결과로 나타나길 바라는 마음 간절하다.

The day I witnessed legislator Park Sun-young’s patriotism

Domestic mass media including some of the major international networks have recently reported on Beijing’s inhumane repatriation of the North Korean defectors back to the Stalinist regime. As being the closest supporter economically and politically to North Korea, China has decided to deport North Korean refugees who finally crossed the border after countless struggles turning a deaf ear to the strong protest and widespread condemnation being made in Seoul.

In protest against China’s recent repatriation scheme, braving unusual weather conditions, a 56-year-old female lawmaker, Park Sun-young from the conservative opposition Liberty Forward party, had been in hunger strike for 11 days sitting in a tiny tent set right in front of Chinese Embassy located at Hyoja-dong, Seoul.

Early in the morning of March 2^nd I headed for Hyoja-dong to join a rally scheduled to be placed at 10:00 hrs by a civil activist group (Systemclub led by Dr. Jee Man-won) at the same location where the representative Park was rallying. There were already more than 100 civil activists gathered. I noted that the exhausted lawmaker seemed to be totally motionless and speechless. A bunch of reporters and photographers tried to interview her, but situation didn’t permit them to do so.  

Witnessing representative Park’s unparalleled mercifulness and humanism being displayed with determined sprit of self-sacrifice, I was forced to be in deep thought for seconds looking over Chinese flag fluttering in the breeze especially in the capital city of the Republic of Korea.

What the hell where are they now- the ever patriotic crowds who occupied the heart of Seoul city for months in early 2007 vetoing US beef imports? If they were genuine patriots, the street of Hyoja-dong( in front of China Embassy) should have been densely crowded with enormous number of enthusiastic patriots blocking entire traffic near the embassy. Amazingly it has, however, never happened. This is a great irony. I know that a country of sojourn is responsible for the security of the foreign embassies stationing in her territory. I, therefore, found that Chinese Embassy was compactly guarded with hundreds of riot police force with riot vehicles as well. In contrary, less than 100 aged civil activists were only walking back and forth on the street across the embassy.

As known that Chinese foreign minister would visit the embassy around 14:00 hrs, more activists and reporters had gathered to join the protest. Hardly had the gathered activists began to denounce Beijing’s repatriation of North Korean refugees before the legislator fainted at last. Dr. Jee Man-won who had cautiously watched the hunger striking representative immediately called for an emergency ambulance for evacuation. Seeing that the legislator was being carried to the ambulance, as one of the Korean fellow citizens, I was greatly proud of her with highest respect.

Just as usually expected, politicos belong to a newly established party before the general election slated for the next month, showed up by twos and threes in the place where the hunger striking lawmaker was sitting a few minutes ago. They were busily shaking hands and handing out name cards to those who joined the rally. I was quickly fed up by such stereotyped behavior because their behaviors were considered to be very opportunistic. Not to mention, I would call them as baby kissers. I do hope the legislator, Park Sun-young be recovered as quickly as humanly possible and her harsh sacrifice of 11days deserves to get final victory.
